Stay Toasty!

Stay Toasty! is a summer sports game for the Playdate: a road trip through seven places, four sports (skateboard, BMX, rafting and wakeboarding), the crank as your steering wheel. On Playdate, Windows and Linux.

Playdate: upload the .pdx zip at play.date/account/sideload, then on your Playdate open Settings > Games and refresh. PC: unzip and run StayToasty (StayToasty.exe on Windows). Nothing to install.

Credits: a game by Jupiterian Soul. Fonts: Nontendo by Shaun Inman (CC BY 4.0) and Silkscreen by Jason Kottke (SIL Open Font License). The soundtrack is played note by note on recorded instruments, all CC0: guitars and bass by Karoryfer Samples (Brian Wood), drums from Versilian Studios and Karoryfer Samples' Virtuosity Drums (drummer Austin McMahon), a combo organ recorded by cabled_mess on Freesound, vibraphone, glockenspiel, claps and bongos from the Versilian Community Sample Library; the two synths were made for the game. Sound effects: CC0 recordings of waves, wheels, tyres, rivers, rain and crowds by the Freesound community, every name in the game's licenses file.

FAQ

How do I install it on Playdate? Download the .pdx zip, upload it at play.date/account/sideload, then on your Playdate open Settings > Games and refresh.

How do I install it on PC? Windows: unzip and run StayToasty.exe. Linux: unzip and run StayToasty. Nothing to install.

Do I need the crank? No: steer with the tilt or the D-pad, paddle with Up or A, and do tricks on the buttons.

Are there leaderboards? Yes: a top 100 for each sport's endless runs and the daily level, under the username you pick in Settings. Your own runs are kept on the console too.

Can I turn off flashing, or read the sounds? Yes: the game follows Reduce Flashing (the Playdate's setting, or the PC's in Settings), and Settings has subtitles for the sounds that matter in a run.

Is it the same game as Stay Frosty!? It is its summer twin: the same crank steering and feel, with its own sports, places, riders, tricks, music and look. Each game stands on its own, and on itch.io the two come together in a bundle for $6.
